Voting Officers

We follow Robert's Rules of Order for a Booster organization.

Here is the dilemma. We need to elect officers. The individual who chaired the nominee committee is going to run for President and we feel she did not actively look for another candidate. She will be the only candidate for President.  As a group, we do not feel she is the best person for this position. Unfortunately at this time we do  not have another individual who wants to run for this position.

If we as the large group want to vote against her, following RRO, how can this be done? Everything I have read said that if we vote "No" that it will not matter the vote will not be counted. And because she is the only candidate she will get the position.

Is this correct? What other options do we have?

Thank you.

You have two options:

1:  Find, nominate, and vote for another candidate.  If the president is playing fair she will call for nominations from the floor when the time for the election comes around.  If she doesn't, call her on it by PROMPTLY raising a point of order that an opportunity for nominations is obligatory. p. 435.

2.  Write in an eligible person's name on the ballot.

Make sure your bylaws require a ballot vote for elections, no exceptions.  If not, move (majority decision) to hold a ballot vote.

Nominate someone else from the floor before the election.  Of course if you have no other individual who is willing to serve, you're going to end up getting stuck with her anyway.  So your first job is to change somebody's mind and convince them to stand for election.  Then nominate them.

What you can't do is have no president, so if she's the only one willing, she wins.
