Regular meetings

According to the by-laws of our club, we are to have monthly executive board and general meetings.  In place of a general meeting, we have a special event scheduled.  Do we have to have some sort of meeting?  If so, what would constitute a meeting?  If not, can we skip the meeting and go on to the next month?  Or, can we call the meeting to order and adjourn it until the next month?

If your bylaws stipulate that you have a general membership meeting evey month, a 'special event' can not take the place of that meeting.

But, agreeing with Edgar Guest, I believe the "meeting" need only last a minute or so.  It can be called to order and someone can then move to adjourn so that members can attend the party scheduled to start momentarily and the chair can state, It has been moved to adjourn.  Hearing no objection we are adjourned.  Everyone is invited to stay for the party.  The bar is now open".

Even the lack of a second becomes immaterial once the meeting is adjourned.  But, if someone thinks there needs to be a second anyway, well, fine:  Second the motion to adjourn.  :)
