Guest FATHER SAMARAS Posted March 13, 2015 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted March 13, 2015 at 02:33 PM Can anyone help? Our parish council meeting was for 8 p.m. Quorum was not achieved until 9 p.m. Everyone stayed to informally discuss topics until quorum was achieved. Suddenly, a council member stated the meeting was invalid 15 minutes after 8 p.m., forcing us to reschedule our meeting and topics. He claimed "it's in Roberts Rules." I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help on this point?

Those present could have called the meeting to order at 8PM and adjourned and went home at 8:01PM if they wanted to. There's just no specific time limit. You guys really caved because one member said it's in the book? (I've attended more than a few Greek church council meetings, and Ahepa meetings, so I know how it is. Really.) Oh, and the reason you couldn't find it is that it isn't in there.
Shmuel Gerber Posted March 13, 2015 at 04:26 PM Report Share Posted March 13, 2015 at 04:26 PM Your council member is mistaken. There is no 15 minute rule. Those present could have called the meeting to order at 8PM and adjourned and [gone] home at 8:01PM if they wanted to. There's just no specific time limit. But your example is really a separate question. Even if there were a rule in RONR (which there isn't) that would cause a meeting to expire when there is no quorum 15 minutes after being called to order, it wouldn't prevent the meeting from being adjourned after less than 15 minutes has passed.
