Accepting a Nomination

Our bylaws state that nominations of officers and directors will be made at our March and April meetings, with the list of candidates to be announced at the April meeting following the close of nominations.  If a member was nominated for office in March and declined the nomination, can he accept a nomination for the same position at the April meeting if he has changed his mind and is nominated by another member?

Yes.  However, although it is good policy to ascertain whether people who are nominated for a position are willing to serve, there is no requirement to do so in RONR.  Your own rules or customs might contain such a provision, though.   Also, there is no provision in RONR for declining a nomination, although a candidate can decline to serve if he is elected.   And a member who "declines" the nomination of the nominating committee is free to change his mind and "accept" a later nomination from the nominating committee or from  the floor.

Thank you.  Another question - how do we handle  it if no one accepts the nomination for a position and we have no candidate?  Our bylaws specifically state that the term of office is for one year.  They state that vacancies may be filled by the president, but it is my understanding that lack of a candidate is not the same as a vacancy.

There is no requirement to accept or decline a nomination in RONR, but even if there is a candidate for every position or there are no candidates for a position, the ballot must contain a space for write-in votes for each office.

And you are correct, an incomplete election is not the same as a vacancy.

. . . how do we handle  it if no one accepts the nomination for a position and we have no candidate?

You hold the election anyway. If no one is elected (or if the person elected declines the office), you vote again. And again. Until the election is complete.

A longer-term solution might be to amend the bylaws to eliminate the office. Or figure out what it is about the position that scares everyone away.

Note that the same person can hold more than one office.

Vote anyway.  People can write in the name of any eligible candidate.

Nominations are a good way to help the members to reach a majority choice, but they're not essential to holding an election.

It might take a couple of ballots before people tend to coalesce around one favorite, but often even someone who was never nominated, or expressed no interest in being nominated will agree to serve if actually elected.
