Guest mmpullen Posted October 5, 2015 at 08:14 PM Report Share Posted October 5, 2015 at 08:14 PM At a recent Board meeting, the Board approved an already existing special committee to become a standing committee. However, the assembly, not the Board, has the authority to create and disband committees. By extension, the assembly is the only body that can change the status of a committee. My advice is that the Board does not have the authority to change the status of a committee and that the action is null and void and the committee is still a special committee until the assembly makes the change. But in reading these posts, all is not as cut and dried as it sometimes appears. What needs to be done to move forward and have the assembly make this change as they most certainly will at their next meeting?

Raise a point of order to the effect that the board's action was improper. The chair will rule on the point of order. The chair's ruling can be appealed. Bruce Lages Posted October 5, 2015 at 09:37 PM Report Share Posted October 5, 2015 at 09:37 PM Also, if your bylaws currently list any standing committees, the creation of a new standing committee will require a bylaw amendment to that effect.
