Gloria Posted February 11, 2017 at 01:05 AM Report Share Posted February 11, 2017 at 01:05 AM My organization will be electing officers in June. A Nominating Committee will present a slate of proposed officers at our Quarterly meeting in March. Our bylaws allow nominations from the floor. We plan to have printed ballots for the voting in June. The proposed slate of officers will be on the ballot. Question: How do I handle nominations from the floor? Do I include a "Write In:" area on the ballot? Do I write in the names of the floor nominations and then copy the ballots before the voting begins? We have had so many errors in past elections, I would really like to do it right this time. Thank you Gloria
Joshua Katz Posted February 11, 2017 at 01:16 AM Report Share Posted February 11, 2017 at 01:16 AM Nominees are not write-ins. Make the ballots after you know who the nominees are, or else just use slips of paper and have people write their choices. Don't treat some nominees differently from others, though. Rev Ed Posted February 11, 2017 at 04:55 AM Report Share Posted February 11, 2017 at 04:55 AM You can just have a blank line for each position, or you can list each nominee for each position (pre-printed) plus a blank line for each position allowing for a member to check off a nominee's name, or write in the name of someone nominated from the floor (or a true 'write-in' vote.) Either option works.
Gary Novosielski Posted February 12, 2017 at 03:25 AM Report Share Posted February 12, 2017 at 03:25 AM And if names are listed on the ballot or not, there should always be room for write-ins.

Well, it would be truly awful if the ballot had no names listed on it AND there wasn't any room for write-ins. :-)
