Guest Will A Posted May 8, 2017 at 12:24 PM Report Share Posted May 8, 2017 at 12:24 PM Can a motion that was passed in a previous meeting be changed, if so, what is the procedure. In this case, there were two items in the motion that could create a conflict, and it would be better if both were separate motions.
Richard Brown Posted May 8, 2017 at 12:39 PM Report Share Posted May 8, 2017 at 12:39 PM (edited) Yes, by use of the motion to rescind or amend something previously adopted. It requires a majority vote if previous notice is given, but requires a two-thirds Vote or a vote of a majority of the entire membership without previous notice. Previous notice means notice given in the call of the meeting or given verbally at the previous meeting. No, it won't be any better if these are truly conflicting provisions in the motion which has been adopted. Even separately adopted main motions must not conflict with each other. "Apart from a motion to Rescind or to Amend Something Previously Adopted (35), no main motion is in order that conflicts with a motion previously adopted at any time and still in force." (RONR, 11th ed., p. 111, ll. 23-26)
