Guest Chris Posted May 22, 2010 at 02:27 AM Report Share Posted May 22, 2010 at 02:27 AM A vote was taken and passed at a previous meeting to close our social club of our volunteer fire dept. if the members of the club who have a vote in the preceedings make a motion to keep the club open and it does not pass, is there anything in RONR concerning the amount of times they can attempt this. Thank you!
Kim Goldsworthy Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:04 AM Report Share Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:04 AM There is no limit a defeated motion can be moved anew, in a new order of business (a new "session" technically). So, if you meet monthly, for example, you can make the identical motion every month, forever - until it is adopted, that is. Normally an organization disbands by voting to rescind the bylaws, and once that's done it can't be undone. However, if the motion to close has not yet been fully executed, it is proper to continue to make motions to rescind that original motion.

So even if it has been closed, I suppose a motion could be made to reopen it.
Trina Posted May 22, 2010 at 07:38 PM Report Share Posted May 22, 2010 at 07:38 PM Well, the organization (the volunteer fire department) isn't disbanding, it simply voted to close its social club. So even if it has been closed, I suppose a motion could be made to reopen it.And, if that's the situation, it would be easier to pass a brand new motion to open a social club, than it would be to rescind a (not-yet-executed) decision to close the existing social club. In other words, the club's proponents might well have a better chance of opening a new club from scratch, rather than proposing motions 'to keep the club open.'
