voting by alternate committee member

A non-profit board has 3 standing committees. Each board member is a member of one of the committees.

A board member has been absent 5 months, so chose a long-term alternate to take his place at the board meetings and committee meetings. He will return in July.

At the June meeting of one of the committees, the commiittee members can vote for 2 alternates for their committee.

The person siiting in for the absent board member would like to run for alternate, since the board member returns next month. Can this person vote for himself when it comes time to vote for alternate?

Can this person vote for himself when it comes time to vote for alternate?

Are you asking, "Can a voting member vote for himself?"

The answer is YES.

It makes no difference what the office is, or what the position is.

There is no rule in Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR 10th ed.) which prohibits voting for one's self.

Now, with that said, I have questions about whether this person is empowered to vote. But that's not the question you asked. (By definition, as RONR uses the term, an "alternate" cannot vote.)

But, "C'est la vie."

Well, under RONR, he doesn't have the right to vote at all (RONR, 10th ed., pg. 414, lines 18-21), but if your Bylaws give a "long-term alternate" the right to vote, then he can vote for himself. (RONR, 10th ed., pg. 394, lines 28-32)
