Can this be done and how and if we dont like one or two of the changes does it cancel the whole motion?
Shmuel Gerber Posted June 20, 2010 at 05:26 AM Report Share Posted June 20, 2010 at 05:26 AM we are making changes to our P and Ps and the chair is making multible changes in one motion. Can this be done and how and if we dont like one or two of the changes does it cancel the whole motion? It depends whether the proposed changes that are offered in one motion are independent and whether they relate to the same subject:1) For any changes that are interdependent in such a way that it would make no sense to adopt only some of them, the vote must be taken on all of them together. In that case, if there is any part with which some members disagree, a motion to amend that part can be made and voted on before the changes themselves are voted on.2) For any changes that are independent of each other but which relate to the same subject, a motion to Divide the Question can be made, and adopted by majority vote, before the changes themselves are voted on.3) For any changes that are independent of each other and which relate to different subjects, any member can demand that one or more of the different parts be voted on separately. hmtcastle Posted June 20, 2010 at 11:25 AM Report Share Posted June 20, 2010 at 11:25 AM the chair is making multible changes in one motion. As Mr. Gerber suggests, it's not up to the chair, it's up to the members to determine how they want to consider the proposed changes. In fact, the chair should probably not be making motions at all. See FAQ #1.
