Guest Anne VanLoon Posted March 24, 2018 at 05:51 AM Report Share Posted March 24, 2018 at 05:51 AM Out church is currently without a Treasurer. A Nominating Committee is responsible for presenting the candidate(s) during our called business meeting. My question is this: If the motion is made by a committee, and no second being needed as a result, how should the vote proceed and be counted? Is it simple majority in a manner of our choosing ay/nay, standing etc...or can the motion fail if there is an objection? This is going to be a contentious appointment and we will need to know how to proceed once objections are voiced and voted upon.

Ordinarily, your Nominating Committee will not be making a motion at your church's business meeting, it will only be nominating a person or persons for the office of Treasurer. The members present should then be allowed to make further nominations from the floor, after which the vote will be taken, preferably by ballot. If there is only one nominee, and your bylaws do not require a ballot vote, the chair should simply declare the sole nominee elected. Do you have some sort of rule or rules mandating a different procedure?
