Hello,

This question refers to a church board of trustees. Per our Constitution and Bylaws the senior minister is ex officio on the board. Can the sr minister be elected to a board officer or trustee position? If so the ex officio status would be void we are assuming. Correct?

Thank you,

Suzanne

No, his ex-officio status would not be changed by his being elected to an office. And he already has a "trustee position" since he's, ex officio, a trustee.

What would be accomplished by doing this? Ex-officio members have a vote, and even if the person filled two positions, there would still only be one vote.

I suspect Ms. DeBerry is asking whether an ex-officio member of a board can be elected to an officer position (e.g. secretary) on the board. And, of course, the answer is yes.

She may also be uncertain as to whether an ex-officio member of the board (of trustees) is considered to be a trustee. Again, the answer is yes.
