Hi- I was wondering if a motion was postponed until a guest speaker arrives at the meeting, how would we bring that back up after proceeding to other items of business in the interim?

Yeah I never heard of it and this former parliamentarian/ former chair of our organization is saying that it exists. I can't find anything on that.

Thank you. I think I'm a little uunclear as to what then can be brought up in a motion at plenary. What is the real difference between motions and resolutions besides complication and notice?

I am unclear as to what kinds of things need to be put in writing as opposed to what can be brought before the assembly at a convention. In other words, what is the real difference between a resolution and a main motion?

oh I just thought of something - could the resolutions in which the board is seeking more time to consider be brought up as a motion to amend something previously adopted/ motion to amend the bylaws at the convention itself?

In our governing documents, there is a deadline that the Board must submit all approved resolution proposals to our general membership within 30 days of our convention. The Board has asked me if this could be "waived" to allow for more time. I advised that it could not but could this be considered a "rule of order" and then we can get around this 30 day provision? The way it is set up the committee only had about 4 days to review these resolutions.

Must the possibility of going into executive sessions/closed sessions be included in the organization's bylaws?

A presiding officer of one segment of our national organization wants to avoid reading the proposed changes to her governing documents as it would take too long and be too tedious. I personally think she should do it anyway as not all of the delegates to the Convention will actually read the proposals. But what should I advise her? can she provide a summary of the key points? Can a motion to dispense with reading the proposed changes be entertained?

I was wondering about our upcoming annual plenary session. This is a national organization that was incorporated in NY. And the annual convention will be in the south this year. 1- If the Chair must step away (for less than 15 minutes) and the Vice-Chair is not available, who may step in to preside over the meeting? 2- what is the proper parlance the Chair should use to get someone else to take over?

Darn it! my organization keeps making at least 2 motions to extend the time per topic. It seems a bit much, anything else I should advise?
