  1. Thank you so much. Is there anything that can be done after the meeting has ended?
  2. Is discussion allowed during the election of officers? During nominations, I asked if discussion was allowed and I was told no. Here is our policy: Purpose: To establish the basic structure for board organization. The officers of the board of trustees are chairman, vice-chair, and secretary. Each officer will serve for a two-year term. The officers are elected and sworn in at the first regularly scheduled meeting following the election of new board members. Officers will be elected by the majority vote of the board. The board will use secret ballots to elect officers, unless a board member requests that the board record votes by name. The superintendent will collect and count the ballots in the presence of the board. The board chair of the preceding year (or another officer of the board) will immediately verify the vote count. The new chair will then preside, conduct the elections of vice-chair and secretary, and collect and count the ballots in the presence of the board. Vacancies in the above-mentioned offices will be filled as outlined in law.
  3. During our last school board meeting, the Board Chair began discussing items in executive session that were not confidential. When this was brought to her attention, she said that she was chairing the meeting and we were going to talk about it. This is bound to happen during future meetings, as it has happened in the past but I waited until afterwards to remind her. According to Roberts Rules, how would I address this? She is also in direct violation of the Freedom of Information Act. No other members spoke up, nor do I expect them to speak up in the future or support any motions I make. She has been doing this for 20 years and I am the only board member to question her. I contacted the attorney with the state school board’s association and he said he didn’t know what to do. I do not want to be part of a meeting that is violating open meeting laws, but I also don’t want to leave the closed-door meeting and miss important information. Thank you for your time.
  4. Thank you all so much for this information. It is very helpful. Mr. Mervosh, the report is for information only.
  5. I am a school board member. Below is a copy of our agenda. Under Item 10.3, a staff member will present the back to school plan to the board. It will not come out of a committee. The plan includes option A (Virtual) and B (in-person). If I wanted an option C (hybrid) to be considered, could I make a motion for the administration to develop and present Option C to the board? Can motions only be made for certain items, such as new business? The board is under the assumption that motions can only be made and action can only be taken under the action items and approval part of an agenda.
