Election of officers

A PTA unit did not do their election of officers properly. There was really no notice of the election meeting was given and all members did not have the consideration of sending in possible candidate's names prior to the election.

The president basically declared the officers to be who they would be.

If the meeting has adjourned and no one has said anything, do the members now have the right to challenge what really was a non-election?

Is there a time limit for that to happen, or did it have to happen immediately after the non election took place?

thanks,

Most breaches of the rules (especially procedural rules) must be objected to when they occur, however a few are so serious that they constitute a "continuing breach" and there is no time limit for raising a point of order regarding these.

At first glance, it appears that most of the mistakes in your election process were procedural though failure to give proper notice might be your best bet for a challenge.

The lack of notice sounds (but might not be -- check your bylaws) like a violation of member's absentee rights. See RONR. p. 244.

If this is true, the election is void -- do it again, properly this time.

If the bylaws indicate when the election is supposed to take place, and it did, that is sufficient notice (RONR, p. 87, 558), and the election results stand, as it is now too late (RONR, p. 243) to raise points of order.
