vice chair assuming chair

Small Board of Directors (10 people)

Motion to reconsider was made by Vice Chair - waiting on a second

Issues irrelevant to the business prompted the Chair to relinquish the gavel and Vice Chair assumed Acting Chair responsibilities.

Acting Chair believes the motion was presented "in order" - and asked for a second

Question is -

While the vice chair was "in order" to make the motion - can the vice chair assume the acting chair of the business meeting in the middle of a motion the vice chair made?

Since this is a small board (about 12 members or fewer), it is acceptable for the vice chair to preside over his own motion. (RONR, 10th ed., pg. 471, lines 7-11) It would not be appropriate in a larger assembly. (FAQ #1)
