Guest gjs53 Posted August 11, 2011 at 10:16 PM Report Share Posted August 11, 2011 at 10:16 PM If the duly elected officers make a motion to bring a matter to consideration before the general membership, but prior to the general membership meeting the point becomes moot, must it be presented to the membership simply because the motion was in the minutes of the officers meeting? Guest Kim Goldsworthy Posted August 12, 2011 at 01:45 AM Report Share Posted August 12, 2011 at 01:45 AM No, if I understand the circumstances. In general, it violates a parliamentary principle to make a motion which is meaningless, or which presents a proposition which cannot be adopted. But it is a fine line. I can imagine a scenario where it is moot to you and your buddies, but NOT moot to the other officers.Like, perhaps one or two officers change their minds. -- They want to accomplish the end of making the issue pertinent. Gary Novosielski Posted August 12, 2011 at 11:24 AM Report Share Posted August 12, 2011 at 11:24 AM I think the motion should be offered at the meeting, and the chair should rule on whether it is in order, given the new circumstances. It may well be moot, but it's also conceivable that the members could amend it to change that--or forget about it.No way to tell from here. David A Foulkes Posted August 12, 2011 at 11:34 AM Report Share Posted August 12, 2011 at 11:34 AM I think specifics are called for here. If the motion to be considered was to paint the barn red, and prior to the membership meeting the barn burned down, I'd say it would be dilatory to move the motion at the membership meeting.Gjs53, how moot are we talking about here?
