We have our general electiones coming up in october. We also have a vacant board of director position, due to his resignation. Can we have the special election included with the regular election. Another words have the member vote for 3 board members and have the person that comes in 3rd be the one to fill the remainng year of the one that resigned? Or would it be better to keep the position open and hold a special election in december, and apoint some one per our by-laws til the special election is held.

Follow your bylaws.

This would depend on what your bylaws say about vacancies. If there is sufficient time to give notice of the election in October, yes. That notice requirement might be in the bylaws.

You would have to elect the person separately for the specific term. It could be just third place.

It all depends on the By-laws. By default, a person needs to receive a majority of votes casts to be elected. Thus you may need to hold a separate vote for the vacant position.

However, some organizations allow for a plurality when it comes to an election. In other words, you use the first-past-the-post system - the top two candidates would receive full terms, and the third place candidate would receive the vacant position. If there are only three candidates, you might want to hold a ballot anyway (again, check the By-laws as they may state that a ballot is required for election) in order to decide who gets the shortened position unless one of the three candidates agrees to serve the short term.
