I have a situation where my newly elected President (elected in May) has done nothing but cause problems for the rest of our booster organization. As a result, my vice-presidant and treasurer has resigned. I am now in a situation where I am down two officers and I do not know the procedure to elect persons to fill the vancancies. After speaking with my immediate boss (I work in the public schools), he has suggested that we open all offices at the 1st meeting of the year (Next Wednesday) and hope that someone else steps up to not only fill the vacant offices, but to also fill the Presidential office. I have been to RONR book several times and cannot find what I need to know. PLEASE HELP ME! The person in the office for President is always prepared to do everything by the book and I would like to be just as prepared, if not more, before we meet next week. Thanks!

Check your bylaws for rules pertaining to filling vacancies, which must be followed.

Also, see RONR (10th ed.), p. 279, l. 21-30.

Furthermore, calm down. ;)

Gen. Henry Robert said "It is difficult to find another branch of knowledge where a small amount of study produces such great results in increased efficiency in a country where the people rule, as in parliamentary law." This may well apply to your situation. We all understand that the entire text of RONR will take quite a while to get through. Allow me to recommend Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief. You can easily get through the entire book in an evening and, unlike RONR "sound alikes" RONR-IB accurately corresponds to RONR.

I don't recommend the path your boss suggested UNLESS that path is supported by your bylaws. (It probably isn't.)

After reading and becoming comfortable with RONR-IB, then also read FAQ#20.

I have a situation where my newly elected President (elected in May) has done nothing but cause problems for the rest of our booster organization.

There is no parliamentary rule or law against being a troublemaker. Of course, we don't know how he has caused problems, but the question would be has he violated some rule or law? Chapter XX (10th Ed.) deals with discipline for offenses inside and out of meetings. If anything there applies, it might be helpful.

After speaking with my immediate boss (I work in the public schools), he has suggested that we open all offices at the 1st meeting of the year (Next Wednesday) and hope that someone else steps up to not only fill the vacant offices, but to also fill the Presidential office.

Well, while it may be appropriate to have elections for VP and Treasurer to fill the vacancies, unless the President's term is up you can't just go and elect a new President (or any other office with a validly sitting member in it) like that. It may be possible to Rescind the election and boot him out, but it depends a bit on the language in your bylaws regarding term of office. See pages 642-643 in RONR (10th Ed.).

The person in the office for President is always prepared to do everything by the book .....

Are you sure, or does he just tell you that? Just wondering.....

Maybe I am missing something, but what role do you have in this organization especially since you refer to "my" president and "my" vice-president and treasurer?
