Larry Cisar Posted January 10, 2012 at 09:28 AM Report Share Posted January 10, 2012 at 09:28 AM There is no difference. In the minutes, use the wording that your organization wants.

In the minutes should it be written as "Motion carried."The pair, "adopted" and "lost", has a nice symmetry.
Josh Martin Posted January 11, 2012 at 01:57 AM Report Share Posted January 11, 2012 at 01:57 AM What is the difference between a motion carried and motion adopted?None. In the minutes should it be written as "Motion carried."Adopted is the preferred term in RONR, although in either case the meaning is clear. The minutes should also be written in complete sentences (rather than an outline form), so rather than "Motion adopted," the minutes should read "The motion was adopted," or whatever wording is appropriate in the particular context. See RONR, 11th ed., pgs. 472-473 for some sample minutes.

But between the making of the motion and the vote is a little thing called "debate".
