Our by laws state that if a Director is out of town (NJ) for over 3 months in any year he/she is automatically removed from the Board.

Can this be done and do other condomiums have similiar rules?

Yes, provided it does not conflict with any higher-level rule (such as the Articles of Incorporation or the equivalent) or applicable law. (RONR, 11th ed., pg. 10, lines 21-30; pg. 12, lines 17-25)

We can't interpret your bylaws here, but the can pretty much say whatever the organization wants them to say, as long they don't conflict with any higher governing rules or laws.
