Guest Terri List Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:39 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:39 PM If a meeting is in session, can the president presiding over the meeting call for an emergency adjourment before voting on a motion that has been moved, seconded, and discussed? George Mervosh Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:44 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:44 PM Define "emergency" since I doubt this is hypothetical.
Chris Harrison Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:53 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 02:53 PM The only time the Chair can unilaterally Adjourn a meeting is if there is an emergency (fire, riot, etc) which makes it too dangerous to take the time to adopt a formal motion to Adjourn. Guest Guest Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:12 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:12 PM The emergency: This meeting took place before school started. The bell was about to ring for the students to go to class, but the class advisor said he would excuse the students for a few minutes of their 1st hour class. He said that anyone who wanted to go to class could go and miss the rest of the meeting. The president made a motion to adjourn because he wanted to go to class. It was voted down. Therefore, the president said he had the right to call for an emergency adjournment and adjourned the meeting. What do you think?
George Mervosh Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:17 PM I think you should read Chris' correct answer under RONR and next time he tries, stay and finish the meeting.
Chris Harrison Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:18 PM Report Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 05:18 PM The President was free to go to class and turn the Chair over to the Vice President (or the assembly could elect a Chair pro tem if the VP wanted to leave as well). You all were within your rights to ignore the President's improper Adjournment and continue the meeting but since that didn't happen what is done is done.
