rkirkwood Posted February 15, 2012 at 01:42 PM Report Share Posted February 15, 2012 at 01:42 PM I am looking for references in Roberts rules that would address this question. A member of our church suggested that our church bylaw was subordinate to Roberts’s rules of order since it is referenced as our parliamentary authority in our bylaws. The point was raised in order to block an attempt to amend our bylaws. Our bylaw only requires a majority vote of the members present at any regular or special meeting to change the bylaw. Roberts rules suggest that prior notice should be given and a two-thirds vote required in order to change the bylaw.

jstackpo Posted February 15, 2012 at 02:01 PM Report Share Posted February 15, 2012 at 02:01 PM Your bylaws are supreme (except for applicable laws, and, if you have them, church rules "from above" -- I'll let you decide how far above.RONR, p. 10 ff. covers the hierarchy of rules. George Mervosh Posted February 15, 2012 at 02:13 PM Report Share Posted February 15, 2012 at 02:13 PM RONR also has suggested language for the parliamentary authority in the bylaws......and if your church uses it, the question won't arise againhttp://www.robertsrules.com/authority.html

What you need to do is ask this member to provide documentary proof of such an assertion. While you wait, keep breathing.

David A Foulkes Posted February 16, 2012 at 03:49 PM Report Share Posted February 16, 2012 at 03:49 PM 'Course it does... where else could it go at night?I always had a suspicion that GcT had something to do with that, but I could never obtain any proof or catch him in the act. Still, he does strike me as the type.
