Roll of the Past President

  • The President of an organization has announced that he will run again for President. The Past President is a Board position. Does the current President now become also the Past President or does the Past President from 2011-2012 remain in that position another year 2012-2013?

Well, when President Obama is re-elected in November, do you think he'll also be the past President at the same time that he continues to be the current President?

RONR does not address the position of Past President, so it will be up to your organization to determine the answer to your question through bylaw interpretation. See page 588 (RONR 11th Ed.) for some insights into bylaw interpretation.

I think most here would say that the (immediate) past president is the person who held that position (and no longer does) prior to the person who does hold that position currently. But also keep in mind that every person who has been the president is a past president. So, do your bylaws reference the immediate past president, or just past president?
