Seems a tad improper, but if the majority agrees to open the polls "early", then I suppose it is OK.

But what are you going to do if the contract is amended, during discussion? You'll have to toss out all those "early" votes since they were voting on something different.

So it is not a good idea.

It's quite possible (even probable) that, at this point, the contract is at the take-it-or-leave-it stage.

That's extremely likely. The only way that the tentative agreement (which is being submitted for ratification by the rank-and-file) could be amended would be to return to the bargaining table. And that's what would happen if the ratification vote fails.
