Guest dave Posted February 19, 2013 at 07:27 PM Report Share Posted February 19, 2013 at 07:27 PM My question is, can a board member make a motion for one person and another board member make a motion for someone else. If so which motion is voted on first.
George Mervosh Posted February 19, 2013 at 08:02 PM Report Share Posted February 19, 2013 at 08:02 PM Yes. If you propose Person A for the administrator position, another member may move to amend by striking out Person A and inserting Person B. The first vote will be on the motion to amend. If the amendment is adopted, the final vote is taken on the motion to hire Person B. If the amendment is not adopted, the final vote is taken on the motion to hire Person A. If you're going to have a lot of names in the pot, the device - Filling Blanks, might be useful. RONR (11th ed.), p. 162ff
Gary Novosielski Posted February 19, 2013 at 08:10 PM Report Share Posted February 19, 2013 at 08:10 PM My question is, can a board member make a motion for one person and another board member make a motion for someone else. If so which motion is voted on first.Define "for" someone. Do you mean "in favor of" someone else, or do you mean "on behalf of" someone else.Only one motion can be immediately pending at one time, so the first motion is voted on first. You can't make two main motions at the same time. And you have to dispose of the first (at least temporarily) before considering another one. Of course they can move to amend, in which case that motion to amend becomes the immediately pending motion. Have I found you again?
