Guest TBennett - Illinois Posted February 23, 2013 at 05:16 PM Report Share Posted February 23, 2013 at 05:16 PM We recently passed a resolution in a meeting. After thinking about what was done, several of the group would like to rethink and discuss this a second time. 1. Can we rescend?2. How do we do it according to Roberts Rules of Order?3. What is the process to do so?4. Or is it once a resolution is passed, it is done? Please advise. Thank you

Josh Martin Posted February 23, 2013 at 05:54 PM Report Share Posted February 23, 2013 at 05:54 PM We recently passed a resolution in a meeting. After thinking about what was done, several of the group would like to rethink and discuss this a second time. 1. Can we rescend?2. How do we do it according to Roberts Rules of Order?3. What is the process to do so?4. Or is it once a resolution is passed, it is done?1. Yes - although it's spelled "rescind."2-3. You make the motion pretty much the same as any other main motion, and you would say "I move to rescind the resolution relating to..." It requires a second, and it is debatable and amendable (it can be amended into a motion to Amend Something Previously Adopted, which would just amend the resolution rather than rescinding it altogether). If you provide previous notice, a majority vote will be sufficient for adoption. Otherwise, you'll need a 2/3 vote or a vote of a majority of the entire membership. Notice may be provided by announcing your intent at the previous meeting or by having the Secretary include the notice in the call for the meeting.4. Generally speaking, no, but there are some exceptions. You can't rescind a motion which has already been fully carried out, for instance.
