Can a Vice President hold on to the VP position while running for President

The President's position is open for a four year term.  The nominating committee is recommending the Vice President for the position.  There is one year left in the Vice President's term.  May the Vice President retain his position in case he should lose the election for President. (Or must he resign his VP position in order to run for President.).
