Guest Libby Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:02 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:02 PM If my board passes a motion unanimously with one member abstaining, is it recorded still as passing unanimously? Is it considered a 'negative' vote or would the member have to vote against for that to happen. How is an abstained 'vote' recorded? Members of my board feel that abstaining from a vote means that they are registering a negative vote....... any help would be appreciated!
jstackpo Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:12 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:12 PM In the order you asked... Yes. No [or] Yes It isn't. The "members" are simply wrong. An "abstention" is simply not voting -- there is nothing (obviously, how do you record "nothing") to record, and no implication of preference by sitting on your hands. Guest Edgar Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:46 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2013 at 03:46 PM If my board passes a motion unanimously with one member abstaining, is it recorded still as passing unanimously? Yes. There is no reason to record that the vote was unanimous. It's parliamentarily meaningless and, worse, misleading. Just record that the motion was adopted (or, if a counted vote, the number of "ayes" and "nays"; abstentions are not recorded).
jstackpo Posted October 23, 2013 at 04:02 PM Report Share Posted October 23, 2013 at 04:02 PM Quite correct that "unanimous" is unnecessary. The first nswer should have been "No, "Adoped" will do."
