Adjournment

I have been reading roberts rules of order on line, and in the "Roberts Rules of Order book for Dummies" and the "Roberts Rules of Order newly revised". I am not sure but if the chair gets to the end of the agenda is it necessary for a motion to adjourn or can the chair declare meeting adjourned?

So, after the chair has gotten to the end of the agenda and has asked for any new business and has adjourned the meeting and a member believes that a motion is necessary and decides to argue with the chair, is the member out of order? I am lead to believe, yes! We have several members that believe the chair can not adjourn the meeting without a motion, reguardless!

No, the member is not out of order (although he is wrong). The meeting is over. RONR doesn't control what people do outside of meetings. :)

I'd try discussing this issue with them outside of a meeting. Ask them why it's necessary to have a motion and a vote to adjourn a meeting when it is already apparent that there is nothing left to do. To put it another way, ask them what they'd do if the motion failed.

As far as misconceptions go, however, this is one of the more harmless ones, so you might want to save your strength for other arguments.
