Guest Jim Posted April 4, 2014 at 10:56 PM Report Share Posted April 4, 2014 at 10:56 PM I have been reading roberts rules of order on line, and in the "Roberts Rules of Order book for Dummies" and the "Roberts Rules of Order newly revised". I am not sure but if the chair gets to the end of the agenda is it necessary for a motion to adjourn or can the chair declare meeting adjourned? Rev Ed Posted April 5, 2014 at 12:05 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 12:05 AM A motion to adjourn is not out of order. However, if there is no New Business is forthcoming the Chairman can state "If there is no new business (pauses in case there is), the meeting is adjourned. Guest Jim Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:30 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:30 AM I agree with Rev Ed, to a point, but is it a requirement to make a motion to adjourn the meeting once the chair has gotten to the end of the agenda and has asked for any new business? Rev Ed Posted April 5, 2014 at 03:25 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 03:25 AM No, a motion is not required.
Thomas Ralph Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:26 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:26 PM Just a note that the correct and current version of Robert's Rules of Order, Newly Revised cannot be read online. Make sure you have the right book.
Guest Mike Posted April 5, 2014 at 04:54 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 04:54 PM So, after the chair has gotten to the end of the agenda and has asked for any new business and has adjourned the meeting and a member believes that a motion is necessary and decides to argue with the chair, is the member out of order? I am lead to believe, yes! We have several members that believe the chair can not adjourn the meeting without a motion, reguardless!
jstackpo Posted April 5, 2014 at 05:11 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 05:11 PM Well, if some member(s) insists on moving to adjourn, no harm in letting him/her do so. No point in have in a big argument over that bit of procedure.
Josh Martin Posted April 5, 2014 at 08:45 PM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 08:45 PM So, after the chair has gotten to the end of the agenda and has asked for any new business and has adjourned the meeting and a member believes that a motion is necessary and decides to argue with the chair, is the member out of order? I am lead to believe, yes! No, the member is not out of order (although he is wrong). The meeting is over. RONR doesn't control what people do outside of meetings. We have several members that believe the chair can not adjourn the meeting without a motion, reguardless! I'd try discussing this issue with them outside of a meeting. Ask them why it's necessary to have a motion and a vote to adjourn a meeting when it is already apparent that there is nothing left to do. To put it another way, ask them what they'd do if the motion failed. As far as misconceptions go, however, this is one of the more harmless ones, so you might want to save your strength for other arguments.
Gary Novosielski Posted April 9, 2014 at 04:20 PM Report Share Posted April 9, 2014 at 04:20 PM I agree with Rev Ed, to a point, but is it a requirement to make a motion to adjourn the meeting once the chair has gotten to the end of the agenda and has asked for any new business?Nope. But if anyone wants to, it's also fine.
