Guest bill conforti Posted April 5, 2014 at 12:15 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 12:15 AM when a committee is formed and that committee gives guidelines relative to what they were selected to accomplish, the questions come up as follows:1- should guidelines by the committee be presented, approved or accepted by the board first?2 - should a motion also be made and passed either by a board member and / or at a general business meeting for the proposed guidelines or both? 3- can a committee act on their own relative to what guidelines they are trying to institute? Thank you
jstackpo Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:33 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 at 01:33 AM Well, usually things go the reverse of what you describe: A committee is established, commonly with a motion which include instructions TO the the committee telling it what it is supposed to do. The motion commonly also specifies some mechanism for naming people to serve on the committee, the appointment process. If the committee has a different idea, it should report back to the parent body and request (more motions) changes in its instructions.
Guest Bill Conforti Posted April 6, 2014 at 04:54 PM Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 at 04:54 PM Thank you for reply. In response to my post on 04 April and reply. Assuming the committee was appointed by a motion (which I don't believe it was) and the committee states it's own guidelines, should those guidelines be both, approved by the Board via a motion and also read on the floor for any discussion and/or a motion from the floor to accept or not accept those guidelines. In brief, are motions needed by the Board or by the floor
Thomas Ralph Posted April 6, 2014 at 05:52 PM Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 at 05:52 PM If the committee was appointed by a motion, then that is the end of the matter. The committee should meet as many times as it needs to meet and then report to the body that appointed it.
