Membership Rules

Are there any Roberts Rules that restrict membership or can a club adopt its own membership rules in their bylaws? Example we may want to restrict some members from re-joining,but is it possible to do that?

Yes, we would have to amend the bylaw to do so but is this proper?

Example of current bylaw- membership is open to all male members of the community.

Can we change this to ?

something along the line of membership is open to all male members of the community after an application is accepted by the board members?

As far as RONR is concerned, your bylaws can say whatever your membership wants them to say. RONR is the low man on the parliamentary totem pole.

You can restrict membership to only men. You can restrict membership to only men over 50. Or under 50. Or only "white" men. Or only stupid men (if you want a lot of members!).

There might be some laws that restrict what you might want to do but RONR doesn't.
