Guest Jean Posted May 24, 2014 at 06:03 PM Report Share Posted May 24, 2014 at 06:03 PM Can a 3 year board member runs for a different office before his term is up? No one was nominated for the position he now has. Would the president appoint a new board member? Would we have to have a special election? It doesn't seem right to run for a new office before resigning the old office.
Chris Harrison Posted May 24, 2014 at 06:16 PM Report Share Posted May 24, 2014 at 06:16 PM Can a 3 year board member runs for a different office before his term is up?Nothing in RONR would prevent it. It doesn't seem right to run for a new office before resigning the old office.Maybe not, but if enough members agree with you they can amend the bylaws to require a current office holder to resign their office before running for another one. But, until that happens nothing in RONR requires it.
Edgar Guest Posted May 24, 2014 at 07:23 PM Report Share Posted May 24, 2014 at 07:23 PM It doesn't seem right to run for a new office before resigning the old office. U.S. Senators will sometimes run for President without first resigning their Senate seat. If they win, they're President. If they lose, they're still a Senator. Timothy Posted May 24, 2014 at 09:42 PM Report Share Posted May 24, 2014 at 09:42 PM Depending on what the offices are, sometimes it makes sense for one person to hold more than one position. An organization might have separate positions defined for secretary and treasurer, for example, but it might be the same person who fills both positions. Guest Eileen Posted May 28, 2014 at 12:18 PM Report Share Posted May 28, 2014 at 12:18 PM I have a question on this topic as well. Can a person hold two voting positions? For example Treasurer ( which is an officer in the by laws ) and Immediate past present (which is an executive board member in the by laws )
jstackpo Posted May 28, 2014 at 12:23 PM Report Share Posted May 28, 2014 at 12:23 PM Yes, but he only gets one vote. Check your bylaws, however. Some associations do have a "one position" limit; RONR does not have such a limit (except in the case of President/Vice President (make no sense to combine) and President/Secretary - both are "essential" - p. 22.
