Treasurer

We are a non-profit organization.  Our Treasurer of many years has decided to leave us. There is no one who is willing/able to be the Treasurer. We are considering hiring an accountant, but our bylaws state that our Executive Committee consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.  Does anyone have experience with how we handle a situation like this? Thanks!

But if the bylaws require that officers be members (which, I think, is a safe assumption), then the election of a treasurer needs to be completed. One possibility is having the same person hold two offices (assuming, of course, that the bylaws don't prohibit this). For example, many organizations have the same person serving as both secretary and treasurer. Also, there's nothing wrong with hiring an accountant (or anyone else) to assist the treasurer.

If, in the end, you can't find anyone to accept the job you might consider amending the bylaws to remove the position and, perhaps, adding a provision for hiring an accountant to do the same job.
