Guest Faith Posted May 31, 2014 at 03:39 AM Report Share Posted May 31, 2014 at 03:39 AM We are a non-profit organization. Our Treasurer of many years has decided to leave us. There is no one who is willing/able to be the Treasurer. We are considering hiring an accountant, but our bylaws state that our Executive Committee consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Does anyone have experience with how we handle a situation like this? Thanks!
Chris Harrison Posted May 31, 2014 at 03:44 AM Report Share Posted May 31, 2014 at 03:44 AM Unless your bylaws say otherwise there is no requirement that the Treasurer (or any officer for that matter) be a member of the organization. If you all want to elect the accountant you hired as Treasurer nothing in RONR will prevent it.
Edgar Guest Posted May 31, 2014 at 12:19 PM Report Share Posted May 31, 2014 at 12:19 PM But if the bylaws require that officers be members (which, I think, is a safe assumption), then the election of a treasurer needs to be completed. One possibility is having the same person hold two offices (assuming, of course, that the bylaws don't prohibit this). For example, many organizations have the same person serving as both secretary and treasurer. Also, there's nothing wrong with hiring an accountant (or anyone else) to assist the treasurer. If, in the end, you can't find anyone to accept the job you might consider amending the bylaws to remove the position and, perhaps, adding a provision for hiring an accountant to do the same job. g40 Posted June 1, 2014 at 04:21 AM Report Share Posted June 1, 2014 at 04:21 AM Is there someone who is qualified and willing to be the "Treasurer" - with the provision that the majority of the more detailed tasks would be done by a hired accountant?
