Guest Goliath Posted June 3, 2014 at 02:11 AM Report Share Posted June 3, 2014 at 02:11 AM Can a new Board of Directors unapprove a budget that had been approved by the previous Board of Directors? The previous BOD approved/adopted a 2014 Budget in Jan 2014. A new BOD was elected in May and they voted to unapprove the previous 2024 budget and adopted a new budget. Can they do this? jstackpo Posted June 3, 2014 at 02:37 AM Report Share Posted June 3, 2014 at 02:37 AM Yes. The RONR parliamentary term for "unapprove" would be "Rescind" - p. 305 If any money was spent or other commitments were made prior to the new budgets adoption, those cannot be undone. At least not without a lot of trouble.
Edgar Guest Posted June 3, 2014 at 11:58 AM Report Share Posted June 3, 2014 at 11:58 AM It's best not to think of "the previous board" or "the new board" but simply "the board". Its membership may change from time to time but it's "the board" that's making decisions.
Rev Ed Posted June 3, 2014 at 05:49 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2014 at 05:49 PM The Board can change its opinion afterwards and make a motion to Amend or Rescind Something Previously Adopted. But as others have stressed there are going to be limitations on what you can under when it comes to money related issues. As in, once the money is spent the issue is done. Or in others there may be a legal consequence which is beyond the scope of RONR (such as hiring and then firing an employee - i.e. hiring an employee with money made available from the current budget, and/or firing an employee if the payroll amount is decreased.)
