Guest Lori M Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:28 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:28 PM I heard that a new rule is out that a motion no longer needs to be seconded. Is this true?
Timothy Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:44 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:44 PM Generally, a motion must have a second. However, a second is not required when a committee member is making a motion on behalf of a committee of two or more people. Also, a second is not required in a small committee. Gary Novosielski Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:58 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 04:58 PM I heard that a new rule is out that a motion no longer needs to be seconded. Is this true?Nope. Same rules. Mr. Fish noted some exceptions but they are nothing new either.
Weldon Merritt Posted June 5, 2014 at 05:42 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2014 at 05:42 PM And just to cover all bases, once debate begins or any subidiary motion is made, it is too late to raise a Point of Order about the lack of a second. (Also not a new rule.)

Daisy Carrington Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:02 PM Report Share Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:02 PM I just read in RONR 11th edition that on a small board (less than 12) a second is not required. Page 35 and 488. By the way, the paperback edition is falling apart. Go for the hard cover.
Dan Honemann Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:12 PM Report Share Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:12 PM I just read in RONR 11th edition that on a small board (less than 12) a second is not required. Sure, but there's nothing new about that.
Edgar Guest Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:13 PM Report Share Posted June 8, 2014 at 03:13 PM I just read in RONR 11th edition that on a small board (less than 12) a second is not required. But it's not a new rule. You'll find it, for example, on p.209 of the 1951 (6th) Edition (the oldest edition I have).
