Guest Sandra Friedman Posted June 15, 2014 at 06:53 PM Report Share Posted June 15, 2014 at 06:53 PM The president of our organization resigned after only 5 months. Now she wants to be past president. Is this allowed?
Chris Harrison Posted June 15, 2014 at 07:11 PM Report Share Posted June 15, 2014 at 07:11 PM If the bylaws have a specific office of "Past President" then you will need to look to them for your answer. However, logically and historically speaking if someone was President and no longer is they are going to be a past President but that historical fact doesn't grant her any automatic perks or responsibilities (as far as RONR is concerned). Edgar Guest Posted June 15, 2014 at 10:04 PM Report Share Posted June 15, 2014 at 10:04 PM Now she wants to be past president. That's good because, in fact, she is the (immediate) past president, whether she or anyone else wants her to be or not.

Is this allowed? Clearly she is past president; the question is: is she Past President.. If your organization defines an office of (Immediate) Past President then she would presumably be in it, unless there's something to the contrary in your bylaws. If your organization does not define it, then she's just someone out of office.
Guest Sandra Friedman Posted June 16, 2014 at 06:31 PM Report Share Posted June 16, 2014 at 06:31 PM There is no mention of Past President on the Executive which is defined as a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, 4 appointed directors and up to 4 members at large. Even though we currently have a Past President it is not in the Constitution. This person who wants to be Past President and not past president, served 4 mos of a two year term.,
Gary Novosielski Posted June 16, 2014 at 06:35 PM Report Share Posted June 16, 2014 at 06:35 PM The only offices you have are those provided in your bylaws. If there is no Past President defined there, then not only doesn't this new person get the office, the one you have now does not exist, and should not have been voting on the board. You need to address this immediately, as it could put you in a lot of hot water if a non-member's vote affected the outcome of a decision of the board. Someone should raise a Point of Order at the next meeting, and the Pseudo Past President should be excused.
