Guest Jake Posted July 8, 2014 at 06:17 PM Report Share Posted July 8, 2014 at 06:17 PM If two members give notice of different and conflicting amendments to the same policy, what is the procedure at the next meeting? Are both considered, one after the other? If the first is adopted, is the second therefore out of order?
Bruce Lages Posted July 8, 2014 at 06:29 PM Report Share Posted July 8, 2014 at 06:29 PM In regard to conflicting amendments to the bylaws, RONR says (11th ed. p 593, l 35-p. 594, l.7); "If notice is given of several amendments which conflict so that all cannot be given effect, the chair should arrange them in a logical order,...generally taking the least inclusive amendment first and the most inclusive amendment last so that the last one adopted is given effect. Such arrangement of the amendments can be altered by the assembly by a majority vote without debate." I see no reason why this wouldn't also be applicable to a policy as well as the bylaws.
