Guest Ken Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:17 PM Report Share Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:17 PM We are a non-profit social organization consisting primarily of veterans of the U.S. Navy. We elected officers every two years. Our most recent election has completed and the vote has been verified. The winner of the Vice President slot was running for reelection and has been our Vice President for the current term. He was unopposed and received all votes. He died before assuming office. We have six weeks until the new term begins. How should we fill this open slot? Do we need to hold a special election? Can the current President appoint a replacement? By the way, we do have a process for filling this slot between the time of his death and the end of his current term.
jstackpo Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:24 PM Report Share Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:24 PM If you do indeed have a process defined as in your last sentence, just do what it says. Or did you drop a "not" from the sentence?
Guest Ken Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:39 PM Report Share Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:39 PM The existing process provides for filling the current term, which ends September 1st. We do not have a process for filling a term of an elected position that has not yet assumed the duties.
Chris Harrison Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:55 PM Report Share Posted July 14, 2014 at 05:55 PM How do the bylaws define the VP's term of office? Is it 2 years and/or until a replacement is elected or is it a fixed 2 year term without any other qualifying language? Also, when is your next meeting?
