Guest jay jay Posted July 28, 2014 at 01:40 PM Report Share Posted July 28, 2014 at 01:40 PM At the beginning of our school year, the Board sets a budget and the general PTA membership votes to approve and adopt the budget into the records. Is it within the Board's rights to decide to spend monies that are set aside in a reserve line item in the budget, or should they request a vote from the general membership to spend money for an expense they find necessary? Your board has only the authority your bylaws give it. In RONR-land, organizations begin with no board and boards begin with no authority. You might want to consider just what the "reserve" line item is intended for.
Rev Ed Posted July 28, 2014 at 02:36 PM Report Share Posted July 28, 2014 at 02:36 PM There are two quick options here: 1) Either the Board should be allowed to set the Budget on its own without approval of the PTA (the Board can still be obligated to present the approved Budget to the PTA, though.) 2) The PTA could approve a total amount that the Board may spend and then allow the Board to decide how to spend the money (i.e. the PTA allows the Board to spend $5,000 and the Board sets a Budget up to $5,000.)
