Guest Craig Posted August 14, 2014 at 10:38 PM Report Share Posted August 14, 2014 at 10:38 PM Our bylaws define a member in good standing as a person who has paid their dues for the current year. In order to vote you have to be a member in good standing as well as have attended at least three meetings in the previous 12 months. We meet once a month. Ok ... we have always worked under the assumption that in order to be a candidate for office that you had to meet the same criteria that is met in order to vote. Meaning you have to have your dues current as well as have attended at least 3 meetings in the previous 12 month period. However this is not stated in writing. So am I correct thinking that anyone can be candidate? Do they actually even need to be a member if it is not specified? Any guidance would be appreciated. Rev Ed Posted August 14, 2014 at 11:10 PM Report Share Posted August 14, 2014 at 11:10 PM If not specified in the By-laws, anyone can be elected to office. If the organization wants only members in good standing to be elected, then members have two options: a. only vote for members in good standing, or; b. amend the By-laws to create qualifications to be elected to office. Guest Craig Posted August 14, 2014 at 11:36 PM Report Share Posted August 14, 2014 at 11:36 PM Ammending the By-laws to create qualifications will be the long term fix. However in the interim I feel we are stuck. However your A. choice is interesting ... not sure how we could make that work under the current By-laws ?? I think what RevEd is suggesting is that you campaign to elect only those candidates who are members in good standing (even though it appears that the membership is free to elect those who are not). Gary c Tesser Posted August 15, 2014 at 11:40 AM Report Share Posted August 15, 2014 at 11:40 AM ... a. only vote for members in good standing, or;... ... However your A. choice is interesting ... not sure how we could make that work under the current By-laws ?? People who want to vote only for members in good standing will only vote for them. Presumably, members who don't care about that might vote for other people too. So members who think that all of you should vote only for members in good standing should emphasize this in the debate on the nominees. (Debate on nominees is proper, and probably ignored at great peril -- but lots of organizations do.)
Rev Ed Posted August 15, 2014 at 04:56 PM Report Share Posted August 15, 2014 at 04:56 PM I think what RevEd is suggesting is that you campaign to elect only those candidates who are members in good standing (even though it appears that the membership is free to elect those who are not). Exactly. If the members want only directors and officers who are members in good standing, then the members should only vote for candidates who meet that requirement. It's just like with any other election - you vote for the candidate who best meets your opinion. However, if enough members really want the requirement that the Board only be comprised of members in good standing, then the By-laws will need to be amended to say so in the long run.
