Election of Officers-Defeat of Existing Officer Who Has Unexpired Term

If the Vice President, whose term has not yet expired, runs for President, whose term is open for election, and the Vice-President loses the election, does the Vice President drop off the board completely or default back into his unexpired term as Vice-President? If the Vice-President defaults back into his unexpired term, what effect does that have upon the status of another nominee who is on the pre-meeting election slate and who assumed (incorrectly) before the meeting that the Vice-President's position would be open for election? If possible, please cite the specific Roberts Rule that governs this situation.

Presumably, whatever rule applies to the above situation would equally apply up and down the chain of positions open for election on the board--is that correct?

Thank you.

The latter, although I wouldn't phrase it that way. He doesn't "default back into" being Vice President - he continues being Vice President. He never stopped being the VP.

He's out of luck. There will be no election for the Vice President's position. In the future, it would be best to clarify that in these situations, the election in question may or may not happen, depending on the results of other elections.

I don't think there is a specific rule on this subject, but there is certainly no rule in RONR which provides that an officer is kicked out of his current office because he fails to secure higher office.

Yes.
