Guest J Kichline Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:09 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:09 PM We have an election coming up in a couple of months. At this time it appears that no one is willing to run for any of the offices due for reelection. If that happens how are these positions handled? We have a split election - some offices in odd year and some in even year. Our by laws do not address this issue
Guest Edgar Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:37 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:37 PM It's possible that the current officeholders will remain in office "until their successors are elected" (check your bylaws) though of course you can't force them to stay if they don't want to. If no one is willing to serve you might want to figure out why. Or amend the bylaws to eliminate the positions. Or add more positions to distribute the workload. Or, finally, close up shop. Rev Ed Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:48 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:48 PM We have an election coming up in a couple of months. Your first sentence ends the issue for me. The election is a couple months away, so why worry. 1) You still have time to find candidates (maybe you need a Nominating Committee if you don't already have one), and 2) With time to spare, people may not have considered whether or not they want to run. Give it time, people may turn up to volunteer.
jstackpo Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:50 PM Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 at 04:50 PM Announcing your intent to close up shop might be a good first step (because of a lack of willing leadership), not "finally". It might shake some folks out of the woodwork who would be willing after all. If not, there is a message there...

Our by laws do not address this issue Even if you have no nominees you must be sure to leave a space for write-in votes on the ballot for those offices. Write-in spaces are necessary whether there is a candidate or not.

Just wait until the meeting. The reminder to include lines for write-ins on a ballot vote, regardless of the number of nominees is always timely, and in order. Yes, but at the same time this isn't necessarily a big issue at this point. One idea to try and get people interested to be on the Board is to send a notice to the members, either in a newsletter or via a notice on its own, that the Board is looking for volunteers to serve on the Board and mention who they should contact in advance if someone (i.e. a member) is interested. Sometimes you don't get enough credit. But please notice that this is inconsistent with advice to sit back and wait for the last minute. Don't you think?
