Guest Cynthia Hrepich Posted September 8, 2014 at 10:39 PM Report Share Posted September 8, 2014 at 10:39 PM The current president is completing her 2nd year term. The group for 29 years have had a 1 or 2 year term. This president wants a 3 year term.Since we have a VP who has been elected as the president elect, I think the current president should be ineligible to go for a third term and should be ineligible to be nomintated from the floor. Is that true? Richard Brown Posted September 8, 2014 at 11:03 PM Report Share Posted September 8, 2014 at 11:03 PM What do your bylaws say about when the President-elect becomes president? Do they really provide for a president-elect, or does the organization just treat it that way? Do your bylaws limit the terms that officers (or the president) can serve? Your bylaws probably specify when the new terms start and they probably contain the answers to your questions. A president-elect become president automatically. If you truly have a president-elect, you do not elect a new president. The president-elect becomes president automatically.

No. The fact that it has been customary for members to serve one or two terms does not prevent a member from being nominated for and elected to a third term. Explicit term limits in the bylaws would be necessary to make the incumbent president ineligible for a third term The "President Elect" issue does complicate things. Ordinarily, the President Elect automatically becomes President after serving a full term as President Elect, but it would seem that this may not be the case in your organization.
