Guest Barb Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:03 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:03 PM In the event of a vacancy of the President position, do current board members have to resign their board positions before they may run for the office of President? Gary Novosielski Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:07 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:07 PM No. They can wait and see if they win before deciding what to do.
Edgar Guest Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:24 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:24 PM Though there should rarely, if ever, be a vacancy in the office of president as the vice-president would automatically fill that position. I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to be accused of making an unwarranted assumption (i.e. assuming that there is a Vice President.) However, unless the By-laws state otherwise, a current Board member does not need to resign from a position in order to run for another position. And, while we are at it, again unless the By-laws state otherwise, the same Board member can hold two positions (or more) on the Board at the same time. Guest Barb Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:34 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:34 PM Thank you. In this organization there are several Vice President positions, so the VP moving up did not apply.
Weldon Merritt Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:43 PM Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 at 03:43 PM Thank you. In this organization there are several Vice President positions, so the VP moving up did not apply Not so. If you have multiple VPs, the highest ranking one becomes president, and the others each move up one position, leaviong the lowest VP position to be filled by whatver vacancy-filling provisions are in place. The only way around this is if your bylaws specifically say that a vacancy in the office of president is filled in some other manner. And if you are not sure of the relative ranking of your vice presidents, look at the order in which they are listed in the bylaws.
