Board Meetings

Recommended Posts

Our board consists of 14 Officers, one of them as past president according to our by-laws. The meetings are also open to other members but they can not vote but may offer input. Some of our older members believe that as past presidents they are honorary members of the board with voting rights which is not included in the by-laws. Please offer insight.

People believe lots of things that aren't true.

But check your bylaws. Do they make the immediate past president an ex-officio member of the board or do they ambiguously refer to "past presidents".

Either way, most of the regulars here will tell you that it's unwise to give any past president an automatic seat on the board. What if, for example, he was booted out of office for embezzlement. Do you really want him on the board?

No one is an honorary member of anything unless your bylaws so provide.

Additionally, honorary members generally do not have voting rights.
