Observers at meetings

What sort of vote is required to have an observer attend part or all of the meeting when their input is not needed yet they will on the side confer with members?

Assuming that the meetings are normally closed to non-members, a majority vote is required if there is an objection.  Usually it is done with unanimous consent.   If the meetings are typically open to non-members by custom, then no special permission is required.
