Chris Harrison Posted October 8, 2014 at 04:37 PM Report Share Posted October 8, 2014 at 04:37 PM How is a past member treated in regards to non payment of dues according to Roberts Rules of Order? If this person is no longer a member of the organization (and the bylaws don't have any rules regarding nonmembers) RONR (which deals with the rights, responsibilities, and rules of engagement between the body which is meeting and those who are members of that body) wouldn't seem to apply. jstackpo Posted October 8, 2014 at 04:38 PM Report Share Posted October 8, 2014 at 04:38 PM As any other non-member. Same as I would be treated. RONR deals in the present only: you are either a member or not a member now; what you might have been yesterday has no bearing.

Why would you treat(a.) a past memberdifferent from(b.) a past member who did not pay dues? Are they not the same?
Edgar Guest Posted October 8, 2014 at 05:19 PM Report Share Posted October 8, 2014 at 05:19 PM How is a past member treated in regards to non payment of dues according to Roberts Rules of Order? Technically, his resignation could have been rejected and, as a member, he could have been disciplined for non-payment but that ship seems to have sailed. And, in any case, the most severe punishment would have been to expel him from the organization which, in this case, wouldn't be much of a punishment at all. Gary Novosielski Posted October 8, 2014 at 06:07 PM Report Share Posted October 8, 2014 at 06:07 PM How is a past member treated in regards to non payment of dues according to Roberts Rules of Order? Past members are not members, and therefore do not have to pay dues. This is why, when a member who is in arrears on the payment of dues submits a resignation, the membership may decide not to accept the resignation until the dues are paid. And presumably, the dues would continue to accrue until the resignation is accepted. Now, if you're asking whether the membership can refuse to accept the resignation of someone who is all paid up, just to squeeze more money out of them, then the answer is: I don't think so.
