waszka Posted October 14, 2014 at 06:01 PM Report Share Posted October 14, 2014 at 06:01 PM One of our members asked our president elect to provide his criminal background check. Is that required by Robert Rules?
Kim Goldsworthy Posted October 14, 2014 at 06:03 PM Report Share Posted October 14, 2014 at 06:03 PM No. There are no qualifications for office, under Robert's Rules of Order. Heck! You don't even have to be a MEMBER to be elected to the office of President! So, convicted felons are okay, if the voters agree.

Rev Ed Posted October 14, 2014 at 09:58 PM Report Share Posted October 14, 2014 at 09:58 PM One of our members asked our president elect to provide his criminal background check. Is that required by Robert Rules? Nope. If the person is the President-Elect, then it's too late. The member should have asked this during the election process - and even then only the By-laws of the organization (or applicable statute covering the organization) can disqualify someone from holding office in the organization for having a criminal record. Otherwise, the organization is free to elect whoever it wants to a position.
Gary Novosielski Posted October 15, 2014 at 12:52 PM Report Share Posted October 15, 2014 at 12:52 PM A rule that convicted felons cannot be president would be particularly problematic in an organization of convicted felons.

Oh, I don't know. They could always find a non-member (¿-professional parliamentarian-?) who was willing and elect him/her president.
