zanacakes Posted December 1, 2014 at 01:04 PM Report Share Posted December 1, 2014 at 01:04 PM We are having our elections for officers and one of the candidates can not attend because they are recovering from surgery. Can they still accept the nomination for their office? If so, how can we record their vote or any of the other members who are too ill to attend the meeting. Another member is receiving chemo therapy and cannot attend.
Edgar Guest Posted December 1, 2014 at 01:24 PM Report Share Posted December 1, 2014 at 01:24 PM Nothing in RONR requires that someone be present either to be nominated or to be elected, however a note indicating a willingness to serve if elected can be very helpful. Absentee voting is prohibited by RONR.
Gary Novosielski Posted December 1, 2014 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted December 1, 2014 at 02:33 PM We are having our elections for officers and one of the candidates can not attend because they are recovering from surgery. Can they still accept the nomination for their office? If so, how can we record their vote or any of the other members who are too ill to attend the meeting. Another member is receiving chemo therapy and cannot attend. They can accept the nomination in advance by letting someone (maybe the secretary) know that if elected they intend to serve. Even if that weren't possible, they can be nominated, and elected, without being present, and can accept if and when they are elected. But they can't vote if they're not there, and neither can anyone else who is absent, unless your bylaws allows for absentee voting of some kind (and contain rules to implement it, we hope). RONR by default does not allow absentee voting.
